BRONZE MEDALS OF THE POPES OF ROME.

This collection is the most extensive ever offered in this country, far
exceeding the Proskey Collection, sold in 1876, then the largest. All are
in the finest possible condition, except where otherwise noted. All have
been struck 'from dies, except those described as “Cast”; in the latter
case, they cannot be expected to rank as fine in condition. No duplicates,
sizes as usual following the description. For most accurate list of the
Popes see “ Coin Collector's Journal" 1880. page 133. Date of election in
brackets; when not on the medal.

iV 304 Series bearing draped busts to right (six to left), and on re-
verse the historical facts relating to each; from the 3rd to
142nd Pope; nearly all were “Saints” (i. e., in the esti-
mation of the church), but if the almost general type of
Roman nose, is correctly portrayed on these, I doubt if
their sanctity extended beyond their personal desires.

is well struck and centred and is a fine coin in every par-

rev., the budding rod of Aaron, Jerouschalim Kedoschah
(“Jerusalem the Holy”). This coin was ever the most
important with the Jews, as it was the money of atone-
ment, the annual tribute, the only method by which they
could take the census, “ This they shall give, every one
that passeth among them that are numbered, half a shekel ,
after the shekel of the sanctuary ; an half shekel shall be
the offering of the Lord — The rich shall not give more, the

same designs and inscriptions as the preceding, except
“year 3”: a fine and desirable coin, not perfectly sharp
on right side ; but averaging much better than that
engraved  by  Barthelemy,  which  had  a large  hole  in  it;
thick; 14 — “And it came to pass, that on the morrow
Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and behold,
the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and
brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded
almonds — And the Lord said unto Moses, bring Aaron’s
rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token
against the rebels .” Numbers, xvn, 8-10

DENARII OF MARC ANTONY AND IIIS LEGIONS (31 B. C.).

These legions were similar to our army corps — each containing about
6,000 men, divided into ten cohorts or regiments ; their standards were
guarded each by six men. These coins were struck as payment for their
services as well as to flatter their vanity, by the wily Antony.
